I promise you are going to absolutely LOVE these vegan hot dogs! They are simple and super easy to make, as well as perfect to enjoy during the weekends now that the warm weather is slowly coming back.

I made them with vegan sausage, sauerkraut, onion sauce, and mustard. However, you can customize them with your favorite ingredients such as spices, herbs, or even veggies!

How to make a vegan hot dog

  • Make the onion sauce by cooking the onion over medium-high heat and then add all the remaining ingredients. Cook for 10 minutes and set aside.
  • Then cook the vegan sausages over medium-high heat.
  • Fill each bun with one sausage. Top with 1 tbsp of sauerkraut, some onion sauce, and spicy brown mustard to taste.
  • Serve immediately.

Vegan hot dog ingredients and tips

  • Extra virgin olive oil: I like to use extra virgin olive oil to cook most of my recipes, but any type of oil will do. Unrefined oils are the best choice.
  • Onion: you can use any type of onion, although I usually make this recipe with yellow onions.
  • Ketchup: feel free to use store-bought ketchup or make your own healthy version at home.
  • Maple syrup: any type of syrup, including agave syrup, will work well with these vegan hot dogs.
  • Garlic powder: you could also use fresh garlic instead, but I find garlic powder more convenient.
  • Chili powder: this recipe calls for traditional American chili powder, not cayenne. Cayenne and international chili powders are usually incredibly spicy. So if you live outside of the United States, please keep that in mind. If you can only find cayenne, add it to taste until the sauce is okay for you, but not too spicy.
  • Salt: I used iodized salt, but any type of salt is fine.
  • Ground cinnamon: this ingredient is optional, but it will make the sauce taste even better.
  • Water.
  • Vegan sausages: use store-bought vegan sausages or make our homemade version. They are SO good!
  • Hot dog buns: check the ingredients to make sure your buns are vegan. You could also use other types of bread instead.
  • Sauerkraut: store-bought sauerkraut is great, but the homemade version tastes amazing and is so easy to make!
  • Spicy brown mustard: it is my favorite mustard for these hot dogs, but any other type will do.
  • Feel free to customize them with this delicious vegan cheese.
  • If you want to serve them with a side dish, I suggest you try these breakfast potatoes, vegan mashed potatoes, or even Buffalo cauliflower wings.

Vegan hot dog, simple, easy, and absolutely delicious. It is a super flavorful recipe made in 30 minutes and perfect for a barbecue with friends!

Ingredients

For the onion sauce:

  • 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 2 tbsp ketchup, homemade or store-bought
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup
  • ⅛ tsp garlic powder
  • ⅛ tsp chili powder
  • ⅛ tsp salt
  • Pinch of ground cinnamon
  • ½ cup water (120 ml)

For the vegan hot dogs:

  • 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 8 vegan sausages
  • 8 hot dog buns
  • ½ cup sauerkraut (120 g)
  • Onion sauce, recipe above
  • Spicy brown mustard to taste

Instructions

For the onion sauce:

  1. Heat the oil in a saucepan and cook the onion over medium-high heat for about 5 to 10 minutes or until golden brown.
  2. Add all the remaining ingredients, stir, cover, and cook over medium heat for 5 to 10 minutes or until the sauce thickens and the onion is soft. Set aside.

For the vegan hot dogs:

  1. Heat the extra virgin olive oil in a large skillet and then cook the vegan sausages over medium-high heat for about 1 to 2 minutes on each side or until golden brown. Set aside.
  2. Feel free to either eat your hot dog buns at room temperature or heat them instead. To do it, bake, grill, or toast them until they are warmed through and lightly crispy, or take a sheet of paper towel and lightly sprinkle it with a little bit of water, then wrap the buns in the moistened paper, and microwave for about 10 seconds. Cooking time may vary depending on the microwave you’re using.
  3. Fill each bun with one vegan sausage. Top with 1 tbsp of sauerkraut, some onion sauce, and spicy brown mustard to taste.
  4. Feel free to customize them with this delicious vegan cheese.
  5. Serve them plain or with side dishes like breakfast potatoes, vegan mashed potatoes, or even Buffalo cauliflower wings.
  6. Keep the leftover onion sauce in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-5 days.

  • If you’re in a hurry you can use store-bought onion sauce or some ketchup instead. It’s also delicious!
