How to make French fried onions – Step by step
- Peel and thinly slice the onion using a mandolin or a knife (photo 1).
- Pour the milk into a mixing bowl and whisk in the vinegar (photo 2). Let the onions soak in this mixture for at least 10 to 15 minutes (photo 3).
- You can bake or fry the onions. If you’re going to bake them, preheat the oven to 400ºF or 200ºC.
- Combine the remaining ingredients in a separate bowl (photo 4).
- Take a handful of the onion strings at a time (photo 5), then shake off the excess milk (photo 6).
- Dredge them in the flour mixture (photo 7), making sure you shake off a lot of the flour.
- If you’re going to bake them, place them onto a lined baking sheet (photo 8) and bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown (photo 9). Remove from the oven and serve. Add more salt if needed.
- If you’re going to fry them, heat the oil in a saucepan (photo 10), pot, or skillet, and then add the onion strings to the hot oil (photo 11).
- Fry them for a couple minutes making sure you stir them around halfway through the cooking time to make sure every string is crispy (photo 12).
- Remove them from the oil and place them onto a paper towel-lined plate (photo 13).
- Add more salt if needed and serve (photo 14).

- Add your favorite herbs and spices.
- Brown rice flour is my favorite gluten-free flour for this recipe, but pretty much any type of flour will do.
Are French fried onions gluten-free?
They can be! Depending on the type of flour you’re going to be using. If you want to try a gluten-free version of this recipe, I suggest you use buckwheat flour or brown rice flour, although you can make it with whatever you find more convenient!
How long will these French fried onions keep?
It’s important to keep the leftovers in a sealed container in the fridge and your French fried onions will keep in good condition for about 5 days.
